Joe Hastings is the Executive Director of Explora, a hands-on learning center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He works with a talented staff of 87 to create opportunities for inspirational discovery and the joy of learning through interactive experiences in art, science, and technology. Explora has received national recognition for its innovative exhibits and programs. Hastings is currently focused on both continuity and change—reaffirming core values while planning for the future in partnership with the community—as Explora celebrates its 10th anniversary.
Hastings worked for 13 years at the Exploratorium, San Francisco, in various roles including Director of the Center for Museum Partnerships. At the Exploratorium, Joe participated in a handful of National Science Foundation grants including the Memory Traveling Exhibition, Texas Network for Exhibit-based Teaching, and Outreach to Space. In 2006, Hastings traveled to Texas to run the Don Harrington Discovery Center, where he led facility, exhibition, and program renewal projects to bring families together, support the work of schools, and create a community gathering place. Hastings is a 2009 Noyce Leadership Fellow and was a board member of the Association of Technology and Science Centers and Amarillo Habitat for Humanity. Hastings also served as an advisor to the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, which is investing over $100 million in children’s discovery learning networks in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Nevada. He currently serves on the board of the Association of Children’s Museums.
